How can slavery be repaired ?

In 2020, demonstrations against police violence and the toppling of statues of slavers showed that the inequalities and anger inherited from slavery were still present in France and the rest of the world.

In 2021, the historic trial opened in Fort-de-France demanding reparation and compensation for the crimes of the slave trade and slavery committed by the French state.

Hence this question: should France atone for its involvement in the slave trade? What forms would these reparations take?
