On April 22, 2021, two gray inflatable tubes drifted in the central Mediterranean, somewhere between the tip of Italy and that of Libya. From the deck of their rescue ship, the sailors and rescuers of the Ocean Viking can now easily see them on the surface, in the middle of a sea of a dozen fluorescent life jackets and silhouettes.
These rescuers, who have been operating since 2015 on the deadliest maritime migratory route in the world, have been searching for this canoe and its 130 occupants for 24 hours. Two days before, they left Al Khoms beach in Libya. After 22 hours of sailing in the middle of a storm and four distress calls, their satellite phone stopped transmitting at 8:15 p.m. on April 21. During these 22 hours, these four calls were relayed to the European, Italian and Libyan authorities who are coordinating relief on this maritime migratory route.
But these 130 people were not saved.
